Back-to-School Photos

Back in September 2021, I decided my comedian friends needed new headshots. Since it was the start of a new school year, I ran with the theme and dubbed the project back-to-school portraits.

I set up a stool and a small light in the back of a comedy club during their open mic night and wrangled a few friends to kick things off. It didn’t take long for the other comics to notice—like moths to a flame, they gravitated toward the light and my camera. I quickly snapped a few classic shots of each comic and then tossed out playful prompts to capture their personalities.

It was fast, it was fun, and it was so them. There’s just something about a brick wall background that’s perfect for both comedians and school picture day.

These headshots remain some of my favorites—not just because of the people in them but because of how much fun we had. I wasn’t overthinking lighting or angles; it was all about the moment. Sometimes, the best shots happen fast.
